Newly Built USCG Cutter Heads for Ketchikan, Alaska Homeport

U.S. Coast Guard cutter Douglas Denman, the 24th Fast Response Cutter built by Bollinger Shipyards in Key West, Florida, will be homeported in Ketchikan, Alaska. The 154-foot-long cutter will have a crew of 24, according to the USCG. Coast Guard officials accepted the vessel in Key West in late May, at a ceremony attended by Denman’s son, Doug Jr., daughter Karen, and the elder Denman’s grandchildren and their families. The Coast Guard is in the midst of a Fast Response Cutter (FRC) acquisition program to replace an aging Island-class 110-foot patrol boats. Polar Star Goes Into Dry Dock After 147-Day Antarctic Deployment

Polar Star, the nation’s only heavy icebreaker, returned from its 147-day mission is support of the U.S Antarctic Program, and other national interests in Antarctica and the Southern Hemisphere, going directly into dry dock at Vallejo, California, rather than its Seattle homeport.   Work began on phase two of a five-year, $75 million Service Life Extension Program in early April. Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley Returns to Kodiak After Winter Bering Sea Patrol

The Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley is now back in port at Kodiak, Alaska after a 35-day winter Bering Sea patrol during which it engaged in domestic fisheries enforcement, responded to search and rescue incidents and performed at-sea medical evacuations from the Bering Sea fishing fleet. During the patrol, search and rescue cases resulted in them saving five lives, including an individual who experienced chest pain at Akutan and a 20-month-old child at King Cove suffering from respiratory distress. Crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Alert out of Astoria, Oregon, have completed 60-day law enforcement patrol focused on albacore tuna fishing within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone of the coasts of Washington and Oregon. During the two-month patrol that concluded on Aug. 7, law enforcement teams from the Alert boarded 31 vessels, many of which had not been boarded in over a decade and issued 22 violations to commercial fishing vessel operators. Coast Guard officials note their key role in maintaining health populations of marine fish which includes preventing the decline of protected marine species populations and promoting the recovery of endangered marine habitats. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton Returns to San Diego

Mission accomplished. After a 105-day deployment to Alaska, plus biannual shipboard training off the coast of San Diego, the Coast Guard Cutter Stratton has returned to its homeport at Alameda, California. During the deployment Stratton's crew, along with an MH-65 helicopter aircrew from Air Station Kodiak, patrolled the Bering Sea up to the ice edge of the Arctic, where they conducted search and rescue missions in the Bering Sea.
