Public Comment Sought on Trident Seafoods Plan For Bunkhouse Dock Replacement

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is accepting public comment through Jan. 25 on a request from Trident Seafoods Corp. to take marine mammals incidental to pile driving and removal events associated with replacement of its Bunkhouse Dock in Kodiak, Alaska. The project involves removing over 200 pilings, many of them wooden, and replacing them with about 80 steel pilings. The pile driver to be used to remove old pilings and install new ones makes a lot of noise and can disturb marine mammals.  Species that may possibly be impacted range from humpback whales and killer whales to harbor seals. Marc Kielmeyer, an engineering technician for the city of Unalaska, said that Trident has been granted the required permits and that site work for the bunkhouses got underway in late July. Construction of the actual bunkhouses, however, was still in the works, he said. Unalaska Community Broadcasting, a community radio station, noted in late July that Trident Seafoods began a feasibility study in 2017 to explore ways to upgrade its plant at Akutan, but ultimately decided that a complete rebuild was the only reasonable option. Subsequently, Trident began c...

A fire that happened aboard Trident Seafoods’ f/v Kodiak Enterprise in Tacoma, Wash. is under investigation, as the Tacoma Fire Department continues its efforts to extinguish the entire blaze. U.S. Coast Guard officials said Monday, April 10 that they were using a cool spray for the fire onboard and that the waterway to that area of the Port of Tacoma remained closed. The Coast Guard also said that no injuries have been reported to crew of the Kodiak Enterprise or to those battling the blaze, which was located toward the bow of the 278-foot catcher processor vessel and was moving throughout the ship. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The incident began at about 3 a.m. April 8, when a security guard reported smoke about the fishing vessel, which had recently returned from ...
