Pacific Salmon Commission Selects Projects for $9M in Funding

The Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) on March 25 announced funding support for a total of 83 projects totaling $9 million, including 40 projects receiving $5.36 million from its Northern Fund and 43 projects receiving $3.66 million from its Southern Fund. The projects selected for funding support work aligned with the Pacific Salmon Treaty for improved management, enhancement, and habitat restoration for Pacific salmon. The selection of projects receiving support includes work led by First Nations, non-profit organizations, researchers and U.S. and Canadian federal management agencies. Pacific Salmon Commission Boosts Pink Salmon Forecast for Fraser River

The Pacific Salmon Commission in Vancouver, BC has adopted an increased pink salmon run size forecast of 8.57 million fish, citing the numbers of humpies caught in marine test fisheries as evidence that pink salmon abundances are grater that the pre-season forecast of 6.1 million fish. The commission said this past week that the early timing of pink salmon this year is in line with the trend in recent years toward earlier migration timing increasing the overlap between sockeye and pink salmon migration. This increases the difficulty to access international total allowable catch for pink salmon while minimizing the impacts on sockeye salmon. Application Period Opens for Pacific Salmon Commission Grants

Applications for four grant fund programs offered through the Pacific Salmon Commission are being accepted for projects to enhance wild salmon stocks and their habitat, with deadlines ranging from Sept. 6 through Nov. 1. The call for proposals for the Southern Endowment Fund, for southern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Idaho’s Snake River Basin, as well as the Northern Endowment Funds for the area from Cape Suckling, Alaska, to Cape Caution, British Columbia, is Sept. 6.
