NPRB Seeks Pre-Proposals for Integrated Ecosystem Research Program

Concerns over warming waters in the Bering and Chukchi seas and reduction in the extent and duration of seasonal sea ice have prompted the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) to issue a request for pre-proposals for its Northern Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program. The NPRB has stated that it’s specifically interested in how environmental conditions and processes in the Northern Bering Sea influence species of commercial, ecological and subsistence importance, and implications for state and federal fisheries management and communities dependent on the resources. About $6.5 million has been made available by NPRB to pursue answers to these questions in the Northern Bering Sea, in hope that partners may offer additional funding to support research of mutual interest. ...

Down Nominated for Reappointment to NPFMC

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has nominated seafood industry veteran Kenny Down for reappointment to one of two obligatory Washington state seats on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. Inslee made his recommendation on March 7 to Janet Colt, assistant administrator for Fisheries with the National Marine Fisheries Service. Down has served as a voting member of the council since 2015 and is eligible for reappointment for a final term.  Inslee also named Becca Robbins-Gisclair and Jamie Goen as his second and third choices respectively. NPRB Seeks to Fill Two Advisory Panel Seats

The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) is seeking applicants through March 1 to fill two seats on its advisory panel, one for the Arctic Region and a second seat designated for the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Region. The advisory panel of the Anchorage-based research entity represents stakeholders, user groups, Alaska Native communities, and other interested groups and communities from the Pacific Arctic, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska. North Pacific Research Board Looks to Fill Seats on Science Panel

The North Pacific Research Board, created by Congress in 1997 to recommend marine research activities to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, is accepting applications through Aug. 22 to fill four seats on its science panel. Desired qualifications include expertise in one or more of the seven categories, which include: marine fish and/or marine invertebrate ecology; stock assessment and fisheries management; salmon life history and ecology; quantitative ecology; climate and earth systems models; genetics; and physiology.
