NPAFC Schedules Salmon Abundance Workshop

A workshop on salmon abundance and distribution trends has been scheduled by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) for June 4-5 in Richmond, B.C., with both in-person and virtual accessibility. The tentative program and abstracts, which were announced April 12, are available on the NPAFC’s website, https://workshop.npafc.org/. While the workshop is free, space is limited, and registrations are being accepted on a first come, first served basis. Details on how to register and make hotel reservations by the cut-off date, May 9 are available on the workshop’s website. NPAFC officials identified as research objectives of the organization’s science plan as improving knowledge of the relative biomass, distribution, migration and fitness of Pacific salmon in the ocean ...

NPAFC Workshop to Focus on Climate Change’s Impact on Salmon, Trout

A two-day workshop planned for June 4-5 in Vancouver, British Columbia by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC), is to focus on abundance and distribution trends of Pacific salmon and steelhead trout in a changing North Pacific Ocean. The workshop was announced Nov. 30. Its objectives include a range of topics, from improving knowledge of the migration, growth and survival of salmon and their environments, to discussing application of new and development technologies and analytical methods to research and manage salmon. NPAFC has embarked on a new Science Plan to build on the previous international cooperative research that was conducted within the International Year of the Salmon (IYS). NPAFC officials said that the primary goal of the 2023-2027 Science Plan is to...

NPAFC: North Pacific 2022 Salmon Catch Was Second Lowest of 21st Century

A preliminary report issued May 19 during the annual meeting of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) in South Korea, says the Pacific salmon harvest in the North Pacific Ocean in 2022 was the second lowest catch of the 21st century. Despite a growth in total catch compared to 2020, even-year pink salmon catch continued to decline to a level last seen from 1988 through 1992. The last time the pink salmon portion of total catch weight equaled 36% was in 1994 and 1996.   The report was compiled using data provided by member countries Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States. Individual country totals reported were 50% by the United States (352.1 thousand metric tons, of which 342.3 thousand metric tons was caught in Alaska), 37% b...

Thiamine Deficiency Eyed as Link to Poor Returns of Western Alaska Chinooks

A report from the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) says thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency may play an important role in poor returns of western Alaska Chinook salmon. The report in the January 2023 edition of the NPAFC newsletter notes that thiamine deficiency causes abnormal neuromuscular signs and mortality in fish consuming diets lacking thiamine or containing thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys thiamine. The thiaminase enzyme has been found in high levels in certain small pelagic forage fishes that are common prey for juvenile and maturing Chinook. Diets high in thiaminase have been shown to be associated with depressed thiamine concentrations in the predator species, says the article’s author, research biologist Wesley Strasburger of the Alaska Fisheries Science Ce...

Update on Hatchery Fish Impact on Wild Salmon Due in 2023

Researchers with the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) in Vancouver, Canada, said they anticipate including the latest hatcheries related research in their upcoming 2023-2027 science plan, in hope the data would be used to improve management to support salmon stocks. “Scientists are focused on density dependent and carry capacity issues to understand how salmon growth and survival are affected by hatchery and wild salmon abundance and quantify the current limits to salmon production at each life stage,” NPAFC Executive Director Vladimir Radchenko said. “The ability of the Pacific Ocean to produce salmon is not constant, and for the most part, the limits are not known,” he explained. “A general concern is that competition among different salmon populations may lead to low...

NOAA Seeks Nominations for Regional Fisheries Management Organizations

NOAA Fisheries is seeking nominations by July 8 for non-government U.S. commissioners for eight regional fisheries management organizations, including the International Pacific Halibut Commission and North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission. Both are treaty-based entities that play a critical role in the global system of fisheries governance. The commissioners participate in meetings and delegations to help develop and support the United States’ positions on conservation and management of shared living marine resources. NOAA officials have said they’re committed to increasing the diversity of stakeholder voices that represent the U.S. in its international fisheries engagements and promoting representation of underserved communities with a pool of potential candidates. Up to two i...
