Northern Edge War Games Underway in Gulf of Alaska

Thousands of U.S. military service members, five ships and over 150 aircraft are in Alaska for Northern Edge 2023 (NE23), war games in the Gulf of Alaska and elsewhere in the state to enhance combat readiness. They are being joined for the Indo-Pacific Command exercise by other service members from the United Kingdom and Australia to provide opportunity for joint, multinational and multi-domain operations designed to offer high-end, realistic war fighter training. Military Confirms Plans for Gulf of Alaska Joint Training Exercise

U.S. Navy officials have decided to proceed with training in May in the Gulf of Alaska as part of a joint training exercise involving other U.S. military forces, but have not yet confirmed actual dates of operation. Historically, the exercises have occurred every two years since the 1990s. The Gulf of Alaska study area has been revised for 2023 to include the Western Maneuver Area (WMA) as well as the Temporary Maritime Activities Area (TMAA), to enable Navy personnel and units to practice more realistic, complex training scenarios in a safer, more efficient manner that would better prepare them to respond to real-world incidents. Final Decision Coming on Northern Edge 2023 Military Exercises in Alaska

U.S. Navy officials have released a final document on plans for 2023 training exercises in the Gulf of Alaska, with a final decision on which action alternative to implement coming a minimum of 30 days after publication of the final supplemental document. The final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/OEIS) is available for review at www.GOAEIS.com. The document includes consideration of a number of comments made during public comment periods in 2020 and 2021. Navy Responds to Plea Against Gulf of Alaska War Games in Spring 2023

Joint military exercises in the Gulf of Alaska, which take place every other spring on the eve of the Copper River commercial salmon fishery, are already drawing fire from entities concerned about adverse impact on the area’s fishery and environment in the spring of 2023. While the actual scheduling of the Northern Edge war games will be determined by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, opponents of holding these exercises in May are asking the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Northwest to cease holding the event in May of 2023.
