Federal Fisheries Board Takes Up Chum Salmon Bycatch Issues

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council held a special meeting in Anchorage this week focused on two issues: a second review of the chum salmon bycatch analysis and appendices last reviewed in April 2024; and 2025 harvest specifications for Cook Inlet salmon. The meeting is being held in the Egan Center in downtown Anchorage. Several dozen people have already testified at this special meeting, which was scheduled to run through Tuesday, Feb. 11. The five options being considered by the council range from Alternative 1, keeping the status quo, to Alternative 5, which calls for an in-season prohibited species cap on total chum salmon. Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands Annual Crab Industry Meeting Scheduled for Oct. 11

Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials have scheduled the annual meeting with the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands crab industry. It is to be held Oct. 11 in Dutch Harbor. The meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Alaska time (10 a.m. Pacific time). Topics to be reviewed include 2024-25 total allowable catch calculations for Bristol Bay red king crab, Bering Sea Tanner crab and Eastern Bering Sea snow crab. Participants can join via Zoom or in person with the ADF&G staff at the Unalaska Public Library Community Room or on the second floor of the Kodiak ADF&G building. Alaska Board of Fisheries 2023-24 Meeting Date Proposals Now Available

Agendas for the latest 2023-2024 Alaska Board of Fisheries meeting cycling, with sessions in Homer, Kodiak and Anchorage, are now available online. The board accepted a total of 255 proposals from the public, local fish and game advisory committees, organizations and the Department of Fish and Game for review in these regulatory areas. Proposals may be downloaded off the board’s website individually, in sections, or for entire meetings. The website is http://boardoffisheries.adfg.alaska.gov. The Homer session from Nov 28 through Dec. 1, is to be held at the Land’s End Resort. The Kodiak finfish session is set for Jan. 9-12 at Kodiak Marketplace.
