ASMI Adds Two to Marketing Team

The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is boosting its marketing efforts with the addition of Susan Marks and Michael Kohan to oversee its sustainability program and seafood technical program respectively.
Their appointments were announced Dec. 1 by Alexa Tonkovich, executive director of ASMI.
Marks, a native of Seattle and graduate of Washington State University, joined ASMI as a sustainability consultant in July 2014 and is now the sustainability director, overseeing the entity’s Responsible Fisheries Management certification program. Marks is also charged with overseeing RFM program marketing outreach and communications, and represents Alaska at industry conferences.
She was previously employed as a commercial manager with the Marine Stewardship Council, where she promoted use of the MSC eco-label in the seafood supply chain, and as a senior partnership manager with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program.
Kohan holds a masters degree in fisheries from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She worked as a research contractor with NOAA collecting everything from zooplankton to spiny dogfish in the Bering Sea down to the Eastern Gulf of Alaska before joining the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Southeast Alaska as a wildlife biologist.
Kohan will work with the ASMI technical committee of industry seafood experts and the ASMI marketing staff on health, food safety, nutrition, contaminants and other issues affecting Alaska seafood products in the market place.
ASMI officials also announced Dec. 1 that votes are being accepted through Dec. 13 to determine the fan favorite in ASMI’s fourth annual fishing families photo contest.
